This post is long overdue, but I had such a great weekend in San Diego about a month ago, that the experience is stuck in my mind. Rodney and I love visiting places we can explore on foot, and this city has so much to offer! Here’s a look at our long weekend in San Diego.
Where we stayed
My motto is usually – save on the accommodations so I can splurge on explorations. Since we were in town over a holiday weekend, it was a challenge to find accommodations that were both low priced and met our standards – but we managed to find an Airbnb that was perfectly located and reasonably priced at $100 a night.
What we ate
EVERYTHING! Okay, that might be a bit of an exaggeration, however, we did bring big appetites and budget to really enjoy the food in the city. Without going into detail about each restaurant, here’s a list of restaurants I recommend visiting:
– Breakfast Republic – interesting and delicious breakfast
– The Dive SK – yummy creole dishes
– The Taco Stand – we stopped by here a few times for reasonably priced yummy tacos
– Donut Bar – get the french toast donut, seriously!
– Searsucker – grabbed apps and drinks, fun atmosphere
– The Smok’d Hog – everything we had was tasty, the brisket was amazing!
What we did
Explored Coronado. This cute island is just a 10/15 ferry ride from downtown San Diego. We ate on the island, rode around on the (free!) bus, and spent a few hours on the beach in front of the famous Coronado Hotel.
Kayaked in La Jolla. Somehow we managed to pick “the roughest day” to kayak, so we weren’t able to go inside the cove Ecological Reserve, but we did Kayak to the mouth of the cove and had big fun with the guides who pointed out the famous Dr. Suess house and several other landmarks.
After kayaking, we hung out in La Jolla for a few hours, sat out at an open-air bar for a few beers. I loved the beachy feel of the town!
Walking Coffee Tour. With a ton of great coffee shops in the city, we decided to sign up for a guided walking tour in the North Park neighborhood. Our tour guide, Lindsay was amazing and took us to a variety of coffee shops, both modern and traditional, to try coffee and check out roasting productions. Heading to San Diego, check out her tours here!
Balboa Park. We walked over to Balboa Park and spent a few hours exploring the grounds! Most of the museums on the grounds have an admission fee, so we opted not to go in, but spent time admiring the large botanical garden that is open to all.
How we got around
Lyfts, Lime, boats, and trains! We used Lime scooters to get around our immediate neighborhood, called Lyfts when it was a bit further, and rode on a commuter train to get up to our last destination.
Bonus!
Okay, so our trip was a very extended weekend and we actually spent two nights up in Carlsbad, CA. About an hour from Downtown San Diego by the commuter train, COASTER, we met my parents and sister’s family for two more days relaxing at the MarBrisa resort.
This resort was great for a large group since each of the suites has a full, furnished kitchen and our suite was 3 room, giving us all the space we needed. Another bonus of the resort, its attached to Lego Land with a private entrance! My niece and nephew were too young, but it would be worth coming back when they get older.
