Living in the Bay Area I am so lucky to be so close to Napa. And while I say that, I really only go up to Napa when visitors are in town. That was true this weekend, a group of local gals and visitors from the east coast made plans to do some tastings. Our group, old friends and new headed up to Napa in the early afternoon to do tastings at two wineries.
The birthday girl picked two very different wineries – one of the oldest California wineries and a new, contemporary winery. The two wineries made for a great day and our visitors experienced a nice cross-section of Napa wineries.
THE NEW: RAM’S GATE
Ram’s Gate has beautifully appointed grounds with a large, modern tasting room and restaurant. The winery is fairly new, it opened in 2011, and is furnished with neutral modern furniture. The tasting was a formal sit down tasting with a yummy paired cheese board.

I tend to like the more casual stand-up tasting, but it’s nice to get formal every now and then. And with Ram’s Gate’s amazing service, I would recommend this place for a classy afternoon.
THE OLD: GUNDLACH BUNDSCHU
We visited another great winery on the other end of the age spectrum, Gundlach Bundschu Winery is the second oldest winery in California and the oldest continuously family-owned winery. We learned a bit of history as we enjoyed our tastings in a cave along the winery’s hillside.
Here we also purchased a few bottles and enjoyed a glass outside in the picnic grounds. We had a great time here, the staff was laid back, and there were many groups hanging out enjoying the sun. There were a few dogs hanging out too, and I hear it is one of the most dog-friendly wineries.
