As I wandered around the airport in Bali trying to find my driver, I noticed flowers on the ground here and there. I saw these flowers along my taxi ride to my homestay and continued to see variations of small boxes filled with bright flowers. After my first full day in Bali, I was fully in awe of what I learned were daily offerings.
Offerings can be found everywhere throughout Bali; outside of homes, in shops, in front of statues, and along the side of the road. These little boxes were everywhere! At my first homestay, I was so curious to learn what these boxes were for, so when I saw one of the groundskeepers placing boxes around the property early one morning, I jumped up to talk to him!
“Canang sari,” he told me. Simply put, the box filled with flowers, leaves, food, and incense is a daily devotional offering that most Hindu Balinese offer once or twice daily. Women create the beautiful offerings in the morning and evening and can be seen delivering fresh boxes in the area.
These beautiful offerings are so unlike any religious ritual I’ve seen in the US. I found myself snapping quite a few pictures of Canang sari along my trip. Take a look at a few photos of Canang sari:
