SFMOMA First Timer Tips

travel

This trip was looooong overdue! After talking about going for the last few months, I finally spent a lovely Sunday afternoon at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (SFMOMA) exploring both the older exhibits and all of the new, innovative additions that were just recently introduced as a part of the renovation. The SFMOMA was one of the top items on my – Yes, I am a Bay Area native, but, no I’ve never done that – list. And I took advantage of the trip by exploring every corner of the seven-floor museum. The exhibits are such a great combination of art, sculptures, and technology; and everywhere I looked there was a new piece that became my favorite.

Here are a few of my favorite pieces!

This piece was a part of a collection of big bold pieces. The large canvases were so cool to me. I would love to have large pieces (not quite this large) in my home!

Floating music. The dishes created a sort of windchime/musical effect that was so fun to watch and listen to.

It was hard to capture this exhibit in a photo, there were lights coming down from the ceiling, and art throughout the dark room as well. There was something so peaceful about this room, I sat for a few minutes and just enjoyed the darkness.

I’m totally a sucker for a good plant wall, but SFMOMA’s Wall of Life take the plant wall to another level. It is an expansive wall that covers what seems to be the entire side of the museum and features a wide variety of plants that intertwine and grow together. This is just a small section of the wall!

SFMOMA Suggestions

  • Give yourself a big chunk of time to explore! Don’t rush through the museum, there is so much to see.
  • Have fun on the 7th floor! There’s lots to get hands-on with on this floor, again, give yourself time to have fun and explore.
  • Enjoy a pour over at the Sight Glass Cafe on the second floor. The SF originated cafe serves up delicious coffee if you need to perk up before exploring the majority of the museum.
  • Stop by the Gift Shop – more like department store. From replications of SFMOMA art to hipster home goods, the gift shop has something for everybody. There are lots of fun knick-knacks that would make great stocking stuffers for anybody on your list.
